Grateful for time spent with Bill Walton, some volleyball ties, and a favorite story

I can still vividly recall that day. Bill was as charismatic off-camera as he was on it. He shared countless anecdotes, not just about basketball, but about life, music, and his philosophies. His passion for the game was evident, but so was his love for the Grateful Dead and his dedication to his family.

Bill’s stories about his sons were particularly touching. He spoke with pride and joy, reflecting on their accomplishments and their shared love for basketball. It was clear that, beyond his legendary career, his greatest joy came from being a father.

That day in Pasadena was a memorable chapter in the journey of writing *HoopDaddy*. Bill Walton’s kindness and willingness to share so much of his life added a profound depth to the book. It wasn’t just about basketball—it was about the connections and the love that the game fosters between fathers and sons.

In the many years since, I’ve often reflected on that day and the lessons learned from Bill Walton. His legacy is more than just his achievements on the court; it’s the inspiration he continues to provide to so many of us who love the game.
